New Road Legal E46 M3 Bridge To Gantry Lap Record at the Nurburgring!

Hi, I’ve been press ganged into doing a blog for and to be honest, I’m not very happy about it, as I’d much rather be lapping the Ring (so to speak) than attempting to be interesting and witty, but in the interests of keeping the peace, here I am, and here’s a trailer for a short film that we just produced to support the topic of this blog.

My names Sam, a ‘40 something’ Petrol Head with a terminal case of ‘RingWorm’ (the addiction to a certain German Racetrack known as the Nurburgring, and more specifically the Nordschleife (North Loop) )

Like most ‘Ringers’ I have my preferred weapon of choice, that being a white BMW E46 M3 ….. well, to be more exact, she is technically a Schirmer E46 M3 GT as the modifications Schirmer Race Engineering can make to your pride and Joy are substantial enough for the company to be recognised as a small scale vehicle manufacturer in their own right (one of only two in Germany), and as such, can issue their own chassis numbers, so you get their prized name on your log book, instead of the much more common BMW marque.

Anyway, I’m babbling, let me get to the point of this first blog.

The Fastest Road Legal, Naturally Aspirated S54 Engine’d E46 M3 on the Nordschleife …. Catchy title eh

For many years I’ve wanted to build/own the fastest E46 M3 on the Ring, and the car you see now is the product of 6 years of blood, sweat, tears and bags of cash. YES, i know the cars not british, but the pain to get to this point has been put in by a Brit, so it counts in my worn out eyes. Although reasonably proficient myself at lapping the Nordschleife, my age (and wisdom) and a crash or 2 has crept up on me, and I never drive ten tenths on the ring anymore, so I talked with my good friend Moran (VLN and 24H Nurburgring Driver) and with the backing of British Products we decided to join forces and see what my ‘ole bimmer’ affectionately and quite comically nick named Schirmernator2  could do.

The film you’re about to watch is edited and produced by a young local British film maker, Dale Rook, who took the raw footage we had from an old GoPro, and has produced something I’m amazed at, especially considering the relatively small budget. So a huge thanks goes out to  if you’re in the market for any cinematography (wedding, cars, company’s or anything else ‘legal’ ) please give him a call, you will not be disappointed!

So, having agreed on the plan, the question of when we could get Moran in the car for the first time came up, as luck would have it, I decided at the last minute to go to the Destination Nurburgring DN19 event last Friday and Moran was going out for the GranTurismo event on the following Monday, so we decided to go for a shakedown/test with Moran on Monday and Tuesday. Due to the last minute organisation I didn’t have a set of new rubber available in Germany, so Moran was going to have to make do with a set of tyres that had already done well over 85 fast laps of the Nordschleife, not ideal we knew, and when a problem developed on the Monday morning whereby the car started popping into neutral under hard braking and jumping (yes, you do actually leave the ground on the Nordschleife) we thought the Ring Gods where somewhat displeased with us, so we had a drink to them on the evening and hoped for the best on Tuesday. You could say that the circumstances for the test were sub optimal (a favoured saying at the ring), but we felt that the importance of Moran getting some seat time was too good an opportunity to miss.

Moran has transcended the world of us mere mortal ‘Ringers’ in recent years, and now drives in both the VLN and Nurburgring 24h for Team Schirmer, suffice to say in much newer equipment! Whilst the benefits of these developments are obvious for Moran, it has meant that he has not driven a right hand drive, manual car, in anger at the ring for over 3 years. Having switched between right and left hand drive cars quite a lot in recent years, I know from experience how tricky it can be to get the right lines around the Nordschleife when sitting on the ‘wrong side , and the clumping of kerbs is inevitable for the first half a dozen laps at speed, and as you will see from the video, Moran catches a fair few on his left side, but I’ll forgive him for that, unless he’s damaged my rims, in which case I’ll be suing for damages (I’m joking buddy 😉 )

The video you are about to see is Moran’s 5th ever lap of driving Schirmernator 2, its filmed on a closed trackday, with overtaking available on either side. We had disconnected the data recorder prior to the test so that no live timing was available, and what with the ‘Sub Prime Tyre’s’ and ‘Random Neutral Gear Selector’ issues, did not really expect anything too special from the test ……..we were all honestly shocked when we reviewed the GoPro footage, and just how fast it was, part of me still thinks some kind of sorcery must have been involved, but i suppose we are talking about a car built by Tom Schirmer, and they generally do defy known physics! …. anyway, after recovering from the shock, we decided to make a short film from the footage.

We hope you like it!

So, without further ado, ladies and gentlemen, please switch to your massive screen smart TV’s, turn the sound system up to 10, settle back, and watch a truly incredible lap of the Nordschleife.

After watching that, words seem somewhat meanigless, but our sponsors insist on a minimum, so, please, please, please subscribe to the British Products website, their new Youtube Channel, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, etc, etc in order for them to keep funding our search, and for you to keep up to date with all the developments with Schirmernator2 and our quest with British Products for the perfect lap  …. I have a feeling we haven’t seen the fastest from her yet! … I’ll leave you with some snaps of one of the star’s of the show, be careful out there fellow Ringers!
